January 9

A young couple bought a house because they were expecting a baby. They bought a small old house close to down town because it was cheap. The house was dirty and it smelled funny so they worked every night to fix it up. They ripped out all the filthy old carpet and they went to Carpet City to get more. A young man named Sid helped them and they were pleased with their new carpet. The new carpet smell was stronger than the old house smell, and soon both odors disappeared. After fifteen years the family sold the old house. There were three children now, and they were doing well financially. They bought a two story house in the suburbs. It needed a little work. They had to replace the carpets of course.

At Carpet City Sid helped them. ``I remember you,'' he said, ``you were in here ten twelve years ago.'' They were pleased that he remembered them.

When the youngest kid was twelve the couple got divorced. The husband soon disappeared and with him the child support. When at last the youngest child was off her car insurance and the house was paid for the woman decided to cheer up the place with some new carpet. At Carpet City an old, bald Sid said ``I remember you!'' They smiled sadly for a moment.

The woman was lonely in her big house. After a few years she moved into a manufactured home. One day when despair was invading her soul, she decided a bright rug would cheer her living room.

Something was happening at Carpet City. A celebration. Coffee and cookies. Pink punch in a big bowl. Someone had printed a banner on a computer. It read ``Goodbye Sid, Good Luck''. Sid was standing by the punch bowl.

``Your last day?'' The woman asked. They were both a bit bent over now, but Sid showed her the area rugs and she bought a fine one. When the last cookie was eaten and the store closed, they went on to the Crystal Ballroom and they danced the fox-trot all night long.
