June 3

When the stars first found themselves they argued endlessly.

They flung fire balls at one another and dodged behind the moon to avoid retaliation. They chased each other across the sky and the moon spun helplessly among them.

``Who can control the stars?'' the moon cried. There was no answer. The stars fought on. When a star was mortally wounded it fell to earth, but it made no difference to their number.

When the sun came into being he slept the newborn sleep and did not wish to wake.

At last the sun grew angry and shot great golden arrows at each star. A billion golden arrows against the warring stars and the stars fought the sun and stood defiant down to the last and then the sun soared proudly through the skies and patrolled all day to stop the stars from entering the shining blue of the great sun's sky, for the sun had brought light to the earth which was a wonder seen by none.

But the sun grew anxious. He felt the pin pricks of the stars baiting and berating him. Soon they had him down. They beat him down further and further into the darkness and the sun sighed wearily and sank out of sight. The stars now held the sky.

But as the sun slept he gathered strength to battle with the stars again.
