January 2

Once there was a man who worked two jobs to pay off a lot of credit card debt he acquired when he was young and foolish. Late at night when it was quiet in the convenience store where he worked he would think of the SeaDoo and the water skis and the Jeep and all the beer - all the beer - and the girl he married and divorced and the child support and the girl he married and did not divorce and the bills forever piling on the kitchen table, and he would try to think of a way out of the mess, but he knew there was none.

One night late - or early morning - he was driving home through the dark. A wind buffeted the car from time to time and a cold rain was falling. He was driving through suburban countryside. Muddy fields bordered the road. He saw ahead of him a great pale floating creature dancing back and forth. He had worked two ten hour shifts on a diet of bad coffee and candy bars. Hallucinations were nothing new to him. He knew the pale thing would disappear so he drove straight at it, but it didn't disappear. He slammed on the brake and fought the steering wheel. He lost control of the car and it careened into a field and turned over in the mud. He tried to open the door and found it swung easily against gravity. He climbed out and saw a pale creature floating in front of him.

``Had enough of this?'' the creature asked.

``Yes,'' said the man gladly.

Twenty minutes later a logger on his way to work called 911 to report a fatal one car accident. A car on it's side in a field. A bunch of balloons, white and silver and purple, tangled in the wreckage.
